Like many first-time visitors to the Nilgiris, I planned my trip around Ooty. I had been hearing about this place for years. The toy train, the gardens, the lake, the lively markets. Initially, I thought of Coonoor as just a nice half-day trip before heading back to Ooty. That assumption, however, didn’t last for long.
After visiting Coonoor, I discovered that I much preferred its slower pace. I noticed that I was slowing down, taking longer walks, lingering over cups of tea, and enjoying the hills in a whole new way rather than racing through viewpoints and attractions. By the time the trip was over, Coonoor had subtly emerged as my favourite Nilgiris location.
The difference was noticeable almost immediately
Ooty has an indisputable charm, but it also draws a lot of tourists all year round. From the moment I arrived, Coonoor felt different. The town appeared to move at its own slow pace, the roads were less congested, and the surroundings were more laid-back. It still had cafés, markets and plenty to explore, but there wasn’t the constant rush I’d experienced elsewhere. Instead of trying to fit everything into one day, I naturally found myself taking my time.

I enjoyed walking in Coonoor more than sightseeing
Typically, I enjoy making a list of things to see. In the case of Coonoor, I gradually stopped looking at my itinerary. It became equally enjoyable to stroll along peaceful streets dotted with homes from the colonial era, blooming gardens, and tall eucalyptus trees as it was to see well-known sites. The town encourages you to take your time rather than constantly switching to the next viewpoint.
The Coonoor viewpoints never felt overcrowded
Of course, I continued to go to locations like Lamb’s Rock and Dolphin’s Nose Viewpoint. Choosing one of the hotels in Coonoor that allows easy accessibility and places you within easy reach of viewpoints is one of the best decisions. I got a good hotel in that respect and reached stunning valleys in no time, practically by walking for a short time. They offered breathtaking views of rolling tea plantations, waterfalls, and forests. However, the scenery wasn’t the only thing that stuck with me. It was having enough room and time for genuine enjoyment.
I found myself sitting quietly for a while, watching clouds drift across the hills, rather than snapping a quick photo and heading out. That’s something I rarely do. Coonoor somehow made it feel natural.
Even the food in Coonoor matched the town’s pace
The eateries and cafés flawlessly captured the relaxed surroundings. I soon developed a daily ritual of drinking freshly brewed Nilgiri tea with warm pastries, homemade cakes, or South Indian breakfasts that tasted even better in the cool weather.
I enjoyed views of the surrounding hills while switching between simple café fare and hearty Tamil meals for lunch and dinner. There was no pressure to rush through a meal. Time seemed to slow down here too.
The toy train felt even more special in Coonoor
The ride on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway between Ooty and Coonoor is one experience I wouldn’t want to miss. I had a completely new perspective on the landscape as I watched the small blue train wind through tunnels, bridges, forests, and tea plantations. It’s easy to understand why this railway has earned UNESCO World Heritage status. The journey is every bit as memorable as the destination.
Final thoughts
I thought Ooty would be the place I remembered the most before going to the Nilgiris. Coonoor, on the other hand, remained with me. Its serene tea estates, picturesque vistas, quaint cafés, historic railway, and leisurely surroundings provided a more tranquil, quiet, and soothing side of the Nilgiris than I had anticipated.

Ooty absolutely deserves its popularity. However, if you have the time, don’t treat Coonoor as just another stop on the itinerary. Give it a day or two of its own. Choose one of the hotels in Coonoor which allows you to reach important places easily and gives you a glimpse of the local hospitality. You might discover, as I did, that the quieter destination leaves the strongest impression.
